Native Shoes x HAWKs LA
We recently headed to Los Angeles to connect with our friends at Hiking Adventures with Kids (HAWKs), a program dedicated to connecting kids and families with nature through real-world discovery. Through their camps and after-school programs, HAWKs inspires wonder and a love for the environment—a mission that resonates with us deeply, as we’re all about getting families outside, exploring, and being in the moment.
HAWKs “Fall into the Forest” event included a day of foraging excursions, forest feasts, and a natural dye workshop.

Through their camps and after-school programs, HAWKs inspires wonder and a love for the environment—a mission that resonates with us deeply, as we’re all about getting families outside, exploring, and being in the moment.

Wild foraging in Temescal Gateway Park
Families had an incredible day outdoors, thanks to HAWKs, who led a foraging adventure through Temescal Gateway Park. As they explored the trails, they gathered plants and learned about their unique properties. Leaves were collected for sun printing and oak galls (part of an Oak tree) from the surrounding forest were later used to create a natural dye during the bandana dying workshop.

The families enjoyed an apple tasting led by chef, food stylist, and author Aliza Sokolow and a forest feast featuring delicious fall flavors prepared by Chef Michelle. Together, they explored mindful eating, tuning into their senses and deepening their awareness of the food they shared.

Erin from Berbo Studios helped the kids identify oak trees and taught them all about oak galls. Together, they collected fallen galls, boiled them, and turned them into a dye that was used to create their own bandanas—giving the kids a chance to express their creativity using nature.
