How has traveling changed since having kids?

It’s a whole lot more expensive and there’s a whole lot more planning involved. I travel a lot less, but I do love travelling with my family. It’s so fun and the biggest privilege to be able to show them the world! When I had one baby, we went around the world with [my partner’s] band. Now with 3 kids, logistically, we can’t travel with the band like that anymore. We were fortunate enough to go to London and Greece last year and we have the best memories from our trip.

Our holidays are usually somewhere by the beach. Recently, we went to New Zealand just as a family. It is so nice to be able to both be present with our kids and have some quality family time. We don’t plan our days, we take them as they come but we love swimming and eating good food, whether it’s cooking it ourselves with some local produce we find or eating out.

New Zealand is home to me, so going back is always so comforting and I love to be able to show my kids where I grew up and spending time with my twin sister and her family is my favourite.

When you travel as a family, what are some of the most important things you try to prioritize?

We don’t prioritize anything, but we enjoy immersing ourselves in the culture, staying in local villages and Airbnbs that are authentic (not fancy hotels) and going to local grocers/markets to try the local foods and of course eating out at restaurants.

How do you help your kids stay curious and engaged with the world around them while out exploring the world?

I don’t think we help them at all. Being in a new place or country instantly makes them curious and engaged. They don’t watch a lot of tv so they’re absorbing everything that they can see, smell, taste and feel around them.

What’s something you’ve learned from your kids while exploring together?

That children have the most creative minds and it’s fun to be reminded of how creative we all are when exploring with kids. They have taught me the importance of being present in a situation, to slow down, try new things, laugh more and to see things in more way than one way.
