FREE FEBRUARY

Tide Pool Research Camp with marine biologist Parker Kalan

Last month we got to spend a lot of quality time with our friends and fellow outdoor activity advocates, Usal. Together, in response to LA’s devastating wildfires, we partnered in making all of their February events free as part of their LA Community Restoration Initiative.

For 3 adventure filled days, campers took to the tide pools of Morro Bay, one of California’s most pristine intertidal zones, to observe the ecosystem, by day and night. They got curious, explored, hiked, and shared a cozy meal prepared by their host, marine biologist Parker Kalan.

Parker believes that exploring and integrating people from all walks of life into the ocean environment is a critical component of conservation. To him, that’s the whole point of making the outdoors as accessible as possible, especially now. There’s healing through reciprocity in that connection. Falling in love with such a delicate ecosystem inspires people to take protective actions in their own life. And in turn, time spent learning about and caring for nature seems to have an undeniable healing effect on people.
